Curator Video
Designed to Make Video Research Seamless and Functional

About Curator

Curator is a patented video ethnography platform that makes remote streaming, capture, analysis, and presentation simple and secure on the cloud. Its mission is to make DIY video research reliable, affordable, and accessible for anyone looking to improve their products, brands, or services.

Design Goals & Objective

  • Carry out user research to understand the needs of the target users to better inform the design objectives.
  • Redesign the website for a modern, credible brand presence.
  • Simplify the dashboard for better workflows and navigation.
  • Improve tagging, annotations, sentiment, and transcript analysis.
  • Enhance project management, messaging, and video merging for clearer storytelling.

Discovery & Research

To understand the needs of the target users, I conducted:

  • Stakeholder interviews with the founders and product managers
  • Competitive analysis on similar product out there like Discuss, Alida etc.
  • User interviews with users and potential users, the COO, product manager, research team & insight teams.

I identified two primary personas:

  • Research Lead: Oversees multiple projects, needs dashboard visibility, secure storage, and team collaboration.
  • Field Researcher: Records or uploads videos, tags moments, adds annotations, and relies on mobile-first usability.

Key Insights

  • Users needed a modern, trustworthy website that communicates Curator’s value clearly — confirmed through stakeholder and user interviews.
  • Field Researcher: Records or uploads videos, tags moments, adds annotations, and relies on mobile-first usability.
  • The existing dashboard was seen as too complex, creating friction in workflows — user and research team feedback emphasized the need for simpler navigation.
  • Researchers wanted better tagging, annotations, sentiment, and transcript tools to make analysis faster and more insightful — validated by insight and product teams.
  • There was a clear opportunity to improve project management, messaging, and video merging, helping researchers craft stronger stories from their data — an idea reinforced by competitive benchmarking and interviews.

Website Redesign

User Dashboard Design

When I took up the design of the dashboard, I noticed the dashboard was powerful but complex, creating friction for researchers trying to manage their workflow. Drawing from interviews and the team's feedback, I focused on simplifying navigation and decluttering key tasks to make daily use feel easy.

I introduced improved tagging, annotations, sentiment, and transcript tools so researchers could analyze video content faster and extract deeper insights. I also reworked project management, messaging, and video merging features to help users organize research, collaborate more easily, and tell stronger stories from their data — all shaped by real user interviews, competitor benchmarking, and hands-on testing.

Mobile Views

In order to make Curator’s dashboard more accessible across mobile devices, I redesigned it with a fully responsive layout. My goal was to ensure researchers could manage projects, analyze videos, and communicate with their teams seamlessly, whether on desktop or on a smartphone.

I had to simplify the navigation, although prioritizing key actions for smaller screens, and introduced flexible components that adapt without losing functionality. This made the complex workflows of video research intuitive and usable anywhere.

Lesson Learnt

Designing Curator’s end-to-end video research experience revalidates that idea that simplifying complex systems isn’t just about clean layouts — it’s about deeply understanding user workflows and anticipating real-world needs & constraints.

Balancing powerful functionality with ease of use, especially across devices, reminded me how critical clear hierarchy, and flexible design systems are in making sophisticated tools feel effortless for everyone

Opportunities For Improvement

While the redesign made Curator’s platform much more intuitive and easy to use- thanks to countless user feedback, there’s room to include guided setup, contextual tooltips, and in-app tutorials as these could further ease adoption. Additionally, there’s potential to expand into quantitative research & analysis and integrate AI-powered insight summaries to help researchers save even more time when analyzing large volumes of video data.
